Mac Favicon Deprecated -- And RELEASED!

Firefox 3 Upgrade?

Mac Favicon and Mac Favicon XL themes will not be updated for Firefox 3. However, you can restore this feature in Firefox 3 using and the 'Stylish' Fiefox extension. Click your preferred style below, then click 'Load into Stylish' and follow the instructions from;

Original Article:

Iuru pointed me to a plugin on that fixes the issue Mac Favicon was designed to resolve in a far more maintainable and cleaner way than Mac Favicon ever could. Therefore I've decided to deprecate Mac Favicon and Mac Favicon XL themes for Firefox and instead encourage users to install the Stylish addon, then install the Mac bookmark toolbar favicons style from

If you prefer Mac Favicon XL, see the instructions that follow.Mac Favicon XL hides the text labels on bookmarks and allows favicon images up to 32 pixels wide and high. This is useful if you with to further optimize your bookmark toolbar experience by recognition of favicons, and removing the clutter of the text labels. It's also very useful in conjunction with the Favicon Picker 2 addon to select your own custom (large) icons for bookmarks.

Favicon Picker 2 has not yet been ported to Firefox 3, but I've contacted the author, Robert LaFont Jr, to get an indication of update plans. I'll update this thread if/when I receive word back from him.

Demoing Mac Favicon using Stylish

In the meantime, you can install the Mac Favicon XL style in Stylish by going to Stylish's preferences, clicking the "Write" button and copying and pasting the following CSS code into the space provided. I have not yet been able to get a user account on to release it there.

Thanks to;

  • Danil Einspanjer for releasing "Mac bookmark toolbar favicons" style which I used to start this.
  • Iuru for pointing me to it. (No link available.)
  • Robert LaFont Jr for creating favicon picker.
  • most of all Mozilla and the Firefox team for making such an awesome killer product!

And the Stylish code that deprecates Mac Favicon XL theme:

  /* No padding on bookmarks */
  .bookmark-item { padding: 0 1px !important; }
  /* Restore padding on folders */
  .bookmark-item[container] { padding: 0 0 0 7px !important; }
  /* And on bookmarks and folders inside folders */
  .bookmark-item[container] .bookmark-item { padding: 0 !important; }

  /* Hide the left semicircle on bookmarks */
  .bookmark-item:hover { background-image: none !important; }
  /* Restore the left semicircle on folders */
  .bookmark-item[container]:hover {
    background-image: url("chrome://global/skin/toolbar/toolbarbutton-customhover-left.png") !important;
  .bookmark-item[container]:hover:active, .bookmark-item[container][open="true"] {
    background-image: url("chrome://browser/skin/bookmark-open-left.png") !important;

  /* Show favicons on bookmarks */
  .bookmark-item > .toolbarbutton-icon {
    display: -moz-box !important;
    max-width: 38px;
    max-height: 36px;
  /* Hide favicons on folders */
  .bookmark-item[container] > .toolbarbutton-icon { display: none !important; }

  /* Show a minimalistic background on hover on bookmars */
  .bookmark-item:hover > .toolbarbutton-icon {
    background: url("chrome://global/skin/toolbar/toolbarbutton-customhover-mid.png");
  .bookmark-item:hover:active > .toolbarbutton-icon {
    background: url("chrome://browser/skin/bookmark-open-mid.png");

  /* Hide text labels on bookmarks */
  .bookmark-item > .toolbarbutton-text-stack { display: none; }
  /* Show text labels on folders */
  .bookmark-item[container] > .toolbarbutton-text-stack { display: -moz-stack; }

RC 3 (Cand. 2)

Freaking awesome plug in!!

Those are amazing photos on

Those are amazing photos on your website. Are any doctored? The colors and contrast seem to be tweaked.

Bring back the themes - please

Maybe it's just me, or my combination of plugins, but I find Stylish a terrible resource hog. Firefox often ends up pegging my CPU when Stylish is enabled.

The themes worked great, with no resource overhead. Obviously I understand the development overhead for you is much greater - so I understand if it's not an option.

I'm surprised about the

I'm surprised about the issues with Stylish. I haven't experienced those issues with FF3 on Mac OS X.

Are you on Windows/Linux/Mac? Have you upgraded to Firefox 3? Try removing all Stylish plugins except the Mac Favicon one/s.

I'll give it another try..

Maybe it's me. I'm on FF 3.0 on OS-X 10.5.3. I've just reinstalled Stylish 0.5.7 and have your code as the only style.

I'll give it a few days on the reinstall and see how it goes.

glad i'm not the only one.

glad i'm not the only one. i'm on a mbp and stylish makes ff3 run so slow that it's completely unusable

You could try "favicon picker

You could try "favicon picker 3" It works with firefox3

It breaks the tabs for me.

It breaks the tabs for me.

Somebody mentioned this in a

Somebody mentioned this in a review there today, and he replied with a fix for OSX to make the tabs show. Check it out here
I tested it with this Stylish theme, and it works great. It's not integrated into the general "Add to Firefox" release yet, but will be in the next time. Read his reply, it's pretty helpful.

I hate spammers, and this feels kindof spammy of me. My feelings won't be hurt if you erase this comment.

Any suggestions for us mere mortal users?

I enabled the favicons for Firefox2, and it was much easier than this. I'm a journalist, not a programmer. Where does this code go? And why with all the fancy upgrades to FF3, does it still not freakin' display favicons automatically? I love FF, *and* my macbook, but this is frustrating. No easier way, eh?

I've got to get back to my magazine article. Ciao.

I understand this is more

I understand this is more difficult than installing a theme, but I'm not paid for working on this, so can't afford to put much time into it. The sacrifice of implementing these themes in this way has made it possible for them to available at all for FF3.

Sorry I can't help you any more. I'm sure if you spend 10 minutes going through the above insructions carefully you'll be able to figure it out. If anything remains unclear, please let me know and I will provide more detail.

Smart Bookmarks Bar

This firefox addon does exactly what I want: adds favicons to the bookmark bar and hides the page titles. Works on FF3 on Mac and on Linux and requires no manual userChrome modifications.

Smart Bookmarks Bar

Thank you!

Ah, thanks for this comment. Smart Bookmarks Bar is what I was looking for. Sorry Bevan, this is far too complicated for the task at hand :/

Exactly what I was looking for - thanks for the tip from the opposite side of the world.

I too am mourning the loss....

I too am a writer not a programmer ("I'm a doctor, Jim, not a....") and overwhelmed by the process you describe, though you do so clearly; and you are busy and unpaid and we understand; just registering my sorrow. :o(

I've finally been able to

I've finally been able to create a userstyle on to facilitate the instalation of this. Please see the instructions at the begining of this post.

Exactly what i needed

Thanks for sharing this its exactly what i was looking for!

Thanks for the heads up. I found this through google anyway, but pretty useful for you to post some deprecation info.
