IE8 Version Targetting: ALA, Still Undecided

A List Apart's Issue 253 continues discussing and debating the controversial IE version targeting that ALA announced a month ago. CivicActions blogged about this topic then too.

Jeremy Keith and Jeffrey Zeldman provide very realistic and down-to-earth points of view and arguments both for and against version targeting. Although they each reach different conclusions, neither tries to persuade the reader one way or the other. Rather they leave you more enlightened so that you can make your own decision.

'They Shoot Browsers' by Jeremy Keith was better written in my opinion and has more convincing arguments, including this gem;

"The proposed default behavior for version targeting in Internet Explorer solves the problem of “breaking the web” in much the same way that decapitation solves the problem of headaches."

I'm still not 100% decided, but I'm pretty heavily swaying to the side against version targeting. Having said that, I can understand how and why Microsoft, even with mostly good intentions, came to this solution. I can see and appreciate the short term benefits, however I don't believe that Microsoft can pull this off in the long term. As web developers, we have no reason to believe that Microsoft is capable or even intends to follow through with it's promises

I'm really looking forward to DrupalCon Boston 2008. The highlight for me will likely be meeting a bunch of really great people I have come to know, respect and be inspired by;

  • Everyone at CivicActions; My awesome colleagues and team-mates for the last 6 months.
  • Dries Buytaert; For obvious reasons.
  • Karoly Chx Negyesi; It's been great having your support on SoU. I want to put a voice to your words, code-comments and even php code!
  • Folk from the Usability Group; Eigentor, Gaele, SteveJB, Yoroy, CousinHub and many others.
  • Neil Drumm; You're usability discussion at BADcamp (I listened to the podcast) was inspiring and interesting for me.
  • Kent Bye; You have contributed a lot of videos and screenshots that have been inspiring for me. Then there's Backtrace Vizualizer which is just amazing.
  • Angie Webchick Byron; You're never-ending support is inspiring and motivating. Where do you get all that energy from?
  • And too many others to list here...

Reporting a bug on TradeMe -- A Rant

So I found an obscure bug on TradeMe, but there is no way to report it. The contact us section just led to an unhelpful help page. The only email address I could find was mediaenquiries@trademe.co.nz on the Corporate enquiries page. So in order to report the bug I have to blog about it, so I can pass it off as media.

I just heard on the lullabot podcast #53 that lullabot is going to Melbourne to run training sessions in April 2008.

With the Drupal Mini Conf after Linux Conference Australia, and Lonely Planet launching their drupal development in Melbourne, it seems like Melbourne is shaping up to be the “Drupal Capital” of the Southern hemisphere.
